it's all relative, when most people buy bigger rims the tires they put on have a much lower profile so in the end you have bigger rims but the same amount of space between the top of the tire and the fender. most people go from 205 60 15's to 205 40 17 The ratio is much smaller 60 vs 40 by doing this, you don't throw your speedometer out of wack as much because you will have a similar number of revolutions per minute.
