If you have ABS, then open (crack) the bleeder on the caliper. This will prevent old, dirty fluid from being pushed through the ABS hydraulics. If you don't have ABS, then it's a don't care.
When you're done with the pads it's a good idea to flush out the old brake fluid with new fluid. (Should be done every couple of years anyway.)
