got 60K on my rear pads (replaced them a bit too quickly), and just under 93,000 on the fronts (replaced just in time).
A little off track... what are the wires for on the front pads? I just cut them off and installed them, as the socket didn't have a plug to fit it.

Sichin,
Those are called squealers. They indicate that your pads are thin and need to be replaced. When you press the brakes they get pushing in to the rotors and can't squeal. Do your Brakes very soon.

James...Those wires were for the mondeos with traction control...you are supposed to cut them off on our cars

Looked at two different brands of pads, Raybestos and Performance Friction, when we were changing pads on Dan's Cougar, neither brand had the little harness on it, so he just deals with the light. The Mintex pads I got from BAT didn't have the harness either.

When I purchased my pads from Pep Boys they asked if I had the pad wear sensors. The pads without the sensors were about 30 bucks....for the front. The pads with the sensors were almost 100 bucks for the fronts!

Perry got it right. They are brake wear sensors and are used on some Cougars and some Mondeos. When the brake pads are thin enough the imbeded sensors create a ground circuit to the rotor and turn on a dash light. If you purchase pads with the sensors and your car is not equipped, just cut off the wires at the edge of the pad.

I have the same problem you describe. At varying speeds I get an intermitent squeal at some steering wheel angles (usually just off center) and it goes away when I apply the brakes. Pulled off the calipers last night and I have plenty of pad left (1/4 outter and inner) and everything looks to be in great shape (especially for 52xxx miles).
I'm thinking wheel bearings now, but doesn't that usually show up as a rumble or metal-to-metal schreech? Anybody have any ideas?
