I was just reading this on a web site:

Porsche also recently developed a ceramic composite brake (PCCB) system, available as an option on the 2001 911 Turbo, which will now be standard on the 2002 911 GT2. The PCCB system is the first ceramic composite brake disc on a production car, according to Porsche, and its lower weight reduces unsprung mass and improves suspension response.

Any engineers out there been tinkering with composites for brake parts? Sounds interesting to me.

Jeff

F1 and the deceased NA GTP cars run carbon-carbon braking systems. The advantages of carbon-carbon is not so much coefficient of grip as it is reduction in unsprung weight. Carbon-iron has a slightly higher coefficient of grip. The reason we don't see carbon-carbon for CART & IRL cars is cost. The cost of each carbon rotor is approx. $5,000 each. Can you afford that?

MB is supposed to come out with composites on their upper-end 500 and 600 series rides, IIRC. Looks like Porsche beat them to the punch.
