SVT's manufactured before 5/26/99 have the larger front pad. There are only 2 or 3 aftermarket front pads available. Others may know whether they dust more or less than the OE pads. I can't relate to all the brake dust anxiety on these forums.

Try www.spmotorsports.com/index.html for aftermarket pads from Mintex or Axxis.

FYI, I also remember someone complaining rather severely about Axxis pads "squealing" something awful on their Contour. Might ask around, and find out if the Mintex's are any better, if noise is an issue for you.

My understanding is that the E0/1 pads are just a titch narrower and a few mm taller than the normal V-6 pad. My early E0 pads are. No idea if the four and six pads are identical but suspect so. The rears ARE the same and interchangable with normal V-6 pads. The later SVT (99?) pads are the same size as the normal Contique pads as are Cougars. SUSPECT what SVT did was use Mondeo pads on the E0-/1 and stock pads, larger rotors, on the 99 and later cars, de-contenting? Early SVT calipers ARE different with the same piston dia. while later ones appear to be the stockers with longer mount brackets. I've been wrong once or twice in my 63 years, so! My2¢

Figured I'm an authority to reply to this subject after my horror experience.

Received pads from SP Motorsports that were wrong. My pads (E1 SVT build date, I believe, was late April, early May) are skinny eared pads, slightly skinner pad area too. The ears on the pads sent to me were the wide eared, wider pads. No go.

Worked with Bill Jenkins and received 4 (yes that's a FOUR) sets of pads that were the wide eared variety. Bill was shipping the right part # for the skinny one, but didn't open the boxes until the last set to realize that Ford was labeling the boxes wrong.

Finally figured out that Cougar front pads fit my car. Then promptly sent my old pads to Carbotech so they could use the backing plates for track pads.

Good luck, it was about a 4 week ordeal for me. Oh, and I forgot one set from the local Ford dealer and one from Napa which didn't fit either. NIGHTMARE!! Damn Ford.

I came up with the 5/26/99 change date from my local Ford parts dept. They told me earlier this year that the SVT front pad part # changes effective with that build date, and the new SVT pad is interchangable with the stock Contour front pad (but still has it's own unique part #). I've got a set of Mintex C1144 front and rear pads from BAT that I ordered based on my 2/99 build date, but haven't had a chance to put them on yet to see if they fit my front calipers.

Could it be that Ford 'phased out' the old calipers rather than use a firm change date?

Oh well, confusion reigns. Sorry if I added to it.

To update the situation, I talked with my local Ford dealer about the various brake situations. This is the information I gathered.

The E1 SVT shares the same front caliper as the Cougar (same part number) yet the the regular Contiques and Cougars use the same pads (same part number) Put 2 and 2 together and the E1 SVT uses the same pads as the Cougar and regular Contours. The part number for the E1's and regular Contique's are different, my understanding is because of some wear sensor on the front pads, to which I have never seen. I also have a schematic from Ford on the rear brakes which show 2 different sets of pads. One set with wear sensors and one set without. Go figure, haven't seen wear sensors on the rear of Contiques either. Maybe a Mondeo part.

The Mintex pads I got from BAT have wear sensors, and both front and rear. Front sensor is imbedded in the pad material, rear sensor plugs into the backing plate. BAT imports these and they were Mondeo part #'s when I checked them out on Mintex's database.

I'll update whether they fit my 2/99-built E1 when I have them put on in a couple-three weeks.
