I was driving home from work today following this dump truck. I wasnt following too close or so i thought. The truck hit a bump and threw a rock out. Luckily it missed the car so i thought i was out in the clear when i heard the thump. I must have ran over the rock. When i did it threw it up and put a big nast hole in my muffler. Now i have to spend the money i was saving for my suspension and get a new muffler put on.

i know how you feel. I cannot stand being behind dump trucks. If I do get behind one I either try to pass them really fast, stay waaaaaaay back, or pull over and let them get well ahead of me before getting back on the road. I know that last one sounds crazy but I've done that many times.
I just have a fear of truck slinging a huge rock and have it land on my hood or front bumper. I'd much rather it hit my windshield. More than likely that can be fixed alot easier and cheaper that a big dent on my bumper or hood.

I don't suppose you got a license plate number or any other identifying information from the dump truck, did you? The owner of that dump truck owes you a new muffler.

Before I got rid of my previous car, a 1994 Tempo, I swapped radios. I liked the Tempo's radio better. That counts as a mod, doesn't it? I also kept one of my Tempo's wheels to use as a spare. I hate those stupid ?compact? spares that come with modern cars. Does this count as a mod? If so, I guess I have two mods. Replaced burned/melted blower switch and connector on 19 February 2002 with a 1P3T toggle switch from Marvac and a Molex connector from Rat Shack; I guess this now makes three mods.)

Bob, I looked at your picture of your car, that's not Moonlight Blue, that's Portifino Blue, mine is Moonlight Blue and it's MUCH darker.

Most dump trucks, etc. are not responsible for falling debris, many of them have signs on them saying this. I passed a truck today hauling yard waste and limbs and sh** were falling everywhere, good thing i never use the slow lane.

An operator of a truck is responsible for their load. The load is required to be properly secured (i.e. you can't have debris flying out of it - that's just plain dangerous). No amount of signs circumvent that matter of law. A driver of a rig that had its load shift was convicted (or pled guilty) to criminal charges resulting from an accident that killed people locally. His responsibility was due to the fact that he didn't properly secure his load and nothing else. It was a big deal on the news when it happened. Big fiery wreck on the interstate with cars crashing into the back of it and all.
Of course, vehicle damage is a civil law issue, but I doubt civil law absolves an operator of the responsibility for their load.

Don't get me started on dump trucks and gravel haulers. I live near a quarry and gravel haulers zip up and down the interstate I use to get to work. Leaving plenty of room doesn't always do much good because someone else will just run over the rocks and you still end up getting hosed. Karl
