I think from searching that the pronounced rattling nosie I've had under acceleration may be from pinging. Since I've lost power I'm wondering what the long term effects of pinging would be?

mbb41,

If you are accelerating from a low speed / low RPM point, the rattle is most likely coming from the MTX. That type rattle is normal and is a "sign" for you to downshift or backoff a little on the gas. I do not accelerate "firmly" at anything under 2500RPM. If this is not your senario...nevermind...

4000rpm with solid throttle is when it starts on my car.

Interesting,

Normally "ping" will go away the harder you accellerate. When the knock sensor "feels" it, it will retard the timing. Bad gas or perhaps excessive carbon buildup? Do you do a lot of steady state "commuting" driving? If so you might want to take it for a good rip somewhere SAFE.

Have you checked all the underhood wires??? If these are cracked it will be the source of your loss of power and maybe even the pinging. Check the wires on the fuel rail....I'll bet you $5 they are cracked. Read this.
This.
and this!

If there is a rattle around 70 mph it may be the sway bar link, if it's bad...it will rattle. The test is to push in the clutch and see if the rattle goes away. If it does....replace it. The parts $9 each (one on each side)and it should take an hour or so to replace both (longer if you aren't too familiar with working on cars).

Good luck!

Hey MBB41... if u do a search looking for my posts you'll see that 1/4 of them are about my pinging problems !!!

I have a Zetec.. and it seems I am the only one with the knocking...

The other week I found a cracked/cut vaccum hose... I am in the process of changing it...

I hope that is the cause of my problem....

What are u driving again ?? V6 or the Zetec ??

I'm driving both, but the V6 has the "most" of the problems.
