IIRC, what Terry said at SZ was something along the following.
The CDW27 was already being produced or the platform had already been finalized. Then when Porsche finished the engine, it wouldn't fit into the engine bay.
From there, Ford(in it's infinite wisdom) decided to shrink the block instead of widening the engine bay.
I remember more, but not right now.
