terry can best explain but the initial prototype duratecs were built by Porsche and made 250 HP. Ford modified the engine, including "choping off" part of the crank (which may have resulted in the crank whip and our need for the DMD) to shorten the engine to fit. He has posted some pics that you could search for of the prototypes.
