IIRC, what Terry said at SZ was something along the following.

The CDW27 was already being produced or the platform had already been finalized. Then when Porsche finished the engine, it wouldn't fit into the engine bay.
From there, Ford(in it's infinite wisdom) decided to shrink the block instead of widening the engine bay.

I remember more, but not right now.

i wonder if porsche still has a good laugh over that one...or maybe they're like the chef who comes after u with a cleaver when u put ketchup on his steak...

if only ford would have designed maybe a few more inches length and width into the car (that is obviously too small judging by how cramped the interior is)

just imagine how sweet that engine would have been in its true form

Then, in that case, it's Porsche's fault for designing the engine too big, unless Ford didn't give them the exterior dimensions.

Interesting....

Damm sub-contractors.

And adding a few inches here or there is more complicated than it seems, and remember, too, that this was before the horsepower wars. This was the interior accomodation war, and Ford was aiming at Honda in that regard but got last year's model, even with the smaller engine. They sure couldn't afford to give up even more in that regard. This car wasn't meant to be an exotic niche car, it was supposed to be a world-beater.

Of course, most of us here see it differently in hindsight.

As far as the power thing it is very common for proto engines to lose power by the time they are finalized for production. They are often lacking emmision controls, not tweaked for fleet fuel economy numbers, and hand built. Even the REAL Porsche 2.5L flat6 in the Boxster made only 201 HP
