yup, you ready correctly. Today my friend Jeremy with the WRX got pulled over by a MA state trooper and she told him that after market exhaust is illegal in Mass. What a bunch of BS. I didnt believe her at first until we looked it up.

I would say from scanning the law that it does not include "any" aftermarket exhaust. It just includes the ones that make your exhaust louder than stock. Unfortunately, most exhaust systems that increase performance are also louder than stock.

If this law were followed, all cars with fart cans would be pulled over and ticketed. I just don't see that happening.

It also says: "No person operating a motor vehicle shall sound a bell, horn or other device,...".

So everytime someone honks their horn, it's illegal?

Where exatly did your buddy get pulled over? There is a little Troll of a woman with a hugh chip thaty patrols the New Bedford area. She drives a dark blue cruiser, no two tone.

they arent going to pull anyone over except sport compacts, especially since that damned movie. (i think we all know which one im talking about) everyone seems to think that if you have a modified car you must race it on the streets and therefore should be stopped from driving in any situation. damn cops! however a friend of mine has been pulled over and ticketed several times because his exhaust it "too loud" and has gotten off every time because of the certification of its 50 state legality so if jeremy has one he will probably get off.

What about aftermarket pipes on Harley's.... :rolleyes:

that's crap. he should have proof that the unit is DOT legal. take it to court and beat it. simple as that.

there is a law, however that says that you cannot tamper with your emissions control devices. a cat-back exbaust/headers do not control emissions, but the sound and amount of backpressure to the engine. catalytic converters and O2 sensors cannot be modified.

When i got my car inspected in ma a few months ago, the guy told me the same thing, that there was some law out that made them illegal, i thought great, then i was like yeah anything aftermarket right? he said yeah, then looked at mine and said like that, i was like thats not a stock muffler? :p but they were cool and passed it anyways :rolleyes: even the illegal tint...

i bet it will be one of the thousands of laws that are written but never fully enforced except for d*ck cops
