Just remember this!! a stock svt contour can ALLWAYS beat any stock z-24, They are speed limited to 108... so it just depends on how long the race is =)

As much as this is a shock to me I would pick the ATX over the MTX. I agree that the automatic that the Z24 gets is in a class of its own as far as automatics go; my brother has a '97 Z24 ATX and the way it bangs off its shifts at redline is phenomonal. With that said, I'll pick a s***ty MTX over the best automatic anyday. If I went back to an automatic now, I'd die of terminal boredom. And are you sure the Z24 still gets a crappy manual? Up until '98 it got a MTX from Isuzu that couldn't handle the engine's output. The guy who sold me my CSVT used to own a '97 manual Z24; worse, he took it to a strip and drag raced it. At about 36,005 miles the transmission came apart on him.  The '99-current Z24s get a manual tranny from Getrag that is supposed to be much nicer, but I've only shifted it sitting still (at the auto show). Have you driven the current Z24 MTX? Is it still pretty bad? --T.J.

My best friend has a 99 Z24. With intake and exhaust only it runs 15.7. Seeing as how some members with SVT's have had trouble just getting to the 15's, it's very possible to say it's a drivers race.
I've run his Z24 a few times at the track. I can get a 2.1 60' consistantly. Something i can't get out of my SVT.
But, stock vs stock + equal drivers = SVT is faster.

I've owned a 1995 Z-24 before my SVT and my best friend had his SVT at that time. I think some people are forgetting that the OLD Z-24's came with a 2.4L DOHC 4 banger. Mine also can STOCK with a 4:11 gear ratio. I had no trouble hang with my friends SVT until he reached 3rd gear and sometimes I could get a half a car on him off the launch. All in all it held its own and I had 50,000 more miles on it then his SVT and we where both stock.
Now the newer Z-24's come with a 2.2L DOHC. I'm not sure what the gear ratio is but I don't think they are using 4:11 anymore so NOT all Z-24's are the same.

i think anything is possible with the wrong and or right person behind the wheel of the car. if the person in the svt doesnt know how to launch, shift, etc and the person in the z24 does, then i say its possible.
