As for the Roush test/recommendations:

There has been much discussion of late as to whether the thrown rod issue is an oil starvation issue, or a harmonic damper issue. I lean toward the damper school of thought, but honestly there's no way I'm qualified to figure this out on my own. (IOW, I doubt we could have an intelligent argument on the subject, and I would be at your mercy. frown )
My revised 98.5 Owners Manual, Part# F83J-19A321-AB, March 1998, Fourth Printing, page 190, Capacities and Specifications

Engine Oil
Without Filter 2.0L - 4.25L(4.5 qts) 2.5L 5.51L(5.8 qts)
With Filter 2.0L - 3.75L(4.0 qts) 2.5L 5.01L(5.3 qts)

I don't know if the oil pans are the same for 96 and 98.
I'm assuming that they are not.
Maybe Bill or Jim could verify it for us.
