To me it truly seems a shame that in North America, you can count on the fingers of one hand (pretty much) the cars you can buy with turbo diesel engine options.
If I could get a 2003 Mondeo hatchback turbo diesel, or even a Mazda 6 hatch with the TD motor for that matter, I probably would think long and hard about it over anything else.
Anyone know if VW is offering the Jetta wagon with the TDI motor?

mk3 came out year early last year IIRC, might have been in the last part of 2000, but i dont think it was. the VW TD engines you can get here are quite literally amazing! 150bhp and god knows what torque, it was sky-high! VW even used it for rallying once because it was quicker than the petrol version! BMW's diesel, wow, do you get them? try over 150mph!

I work in the oil refining business and I know for a fact that the European diesel is a different specification than the American diesel. The Europeans have great diesel engines but these engines require a diesel that is a higher specification than the American diesel. If you had one of these European diesel engines, you would not be able to find the correct diesel to run in your car since the American refineries don?t make it, yet. If the American public showed an interest in high performance diesel engines, then things may change.

That may entirely be the case, but witness the VW TDI which accomplishes its magic on American diesel fuel.

Not only that but follow some of those "domestic" diesels and the aroma (I'm being kind ) brings tears to your eyes. By the way, I believe those GM diesels that were put into the Caddy and Oldsmobile were gas engines modified for diesel consumption. I think reliability was spotty but my cousin had one of the Olds diesels and I think he had pretty good luck with it. Karl

I think Packrat knows the differences between European & US diesel specs. AFAIK, Euro diesel has a lot less sulphur content than US diesel. Me ?? 2.4 JTD Alfa 156 please....

More than just sulfur. Most importantly centane index! American diesel's centane index is a lot lower than the European diesel. The American VW TDI diesel would be only an average diesel engine in Europe. I know Audi has a diesel which you probably could not tell the difference between it and a gas engine untill you had to refuel. The European diesels are very quite, very fast and quick, and very fuel efficient but requires a much higher centane index than what American diesel has. If you do not believe me, just get one of those high performance European diesel engines and but American diesel in it.
