I think the bigger "downside" to diesels is from an air quality standpoint. Not only that but follow some of those "domestic" diesels and the aroma (I'm being kind
) brings tears to your eyes. By the way, I believe those GM diesels that were put into the Caddy and Oldsmobile were gas engines modified for diesel consumption. I think reliability was spotty but my cousin had one of the Olds diesels and I think he had pretty good luck with it.
