Laser has actually been illegal to obtain speed in NJ until very recently. Now I think there's 10 units in patrol on the GSP, which I've yet to be hit by. Most of the cops are using good ol' reliable Stalker units.
State Troopers are getting sneakier and sneakier though. They're now hiding in known false areas, aka Exit ramp 14 of the Turnpike, or others. So if you don't have a Passport 8500, or a V1, you're pretty screwed.
Also forget the instant-on crap. If you catch one in a bad mood, they'll sit on the side of the road behind a bush, and wait until they see someone speeding to turn on their units. So if no one in front of you is speeding (at least 10 over in most areas) and you pass the cop at 90, you're screwed, radar detector or not.
I'm pretty impressed with how well the Troopers hide on the Garden State Parkway for example, expecially at night! I've seen them almost around every sharp curve that neither a detector or your common sense would save you if you're speeding there, or somewhere off the road near a sign so that if you see something reflective you don't automaticaly thing of it as something suspicious until its too late... but best one is hiding around sharp turns, thats what got me!
