the power steering cooler. The guy at my dealer said he didn't even know the contours had them. The reason I'm asking is because the metal lines have rotted away and I had to replace them. So for a quick fix I removed the lines to and from the cooler and replaced them with a ruber line from the rack to the resivoir, bypassing the cooler all together. I took it to my local garage and they can't figure out where the new lines are to be routed. Not to mention that when they looked up my cars V.I.N. they said the plant my car was made in does not exist. Should I leave the rubber line and forget the cooler or should I spend a fortune and take the risk of taking the car to my dealer?

The power steering system is rather high pressure so they will probably blow out pretty quickly!

I'm very surprised the rubber line on the high pressure side even lasted this long.
The P/S system generates pressures around 200-300psi near steering lock. The pump itself if held at the lock position can generate nearly 1000psi before it fails.
The normal hose you used it bound to fail. Probably right in the middle of a turn! Get them replaced with the proper units immediately.
Yes you should use the P/S cooler. Also remember the P/S system uses DEXRON/MERCON not P/S fluid...

This is not the high pressure side of the rack. Besides the lines are only metal where they come close to moving parts, and the manifold. The high pressure line also turns into a rubber one with a crimped fitting.
Also the hoses I replaced them with are rubber power steering lines.
You think the guy at the dealership would know what PS fluid to give me, but no I got regular ps fluid. that will be changed asap
