Rick, I guess I am not as addicted to tinkering as you are, but it seems to me you need some kind of rigid schedule to abide by. I ran into this with my girlfriend about computers mostly. I have now learned to match my computer time with her away or working time. Your wife has a softball game? Thats 3 hours of car time for you. Going out shopping with a girlfriend? You can sneak in an oil change, or if you give her the credit card, maybe a remote filter installl...
Point is, you can make time for your hobby when she is away, and that doesn't hurt anyone. The only thing to avoid is conscious chosing of the car modding over spending time with her. When you see her watching tv in the living room, drop the wrench and grab the remote.
