Gentlemen, I wanted to get my windows tinted but I do not wantetd to get taken. What is a good price range that I should be looking at? I was thinking like 50% all around. Nothing to drastic but enough just to darken things up a bit. What do most people have??

You've got to be careful when tinting your Windows.
First the front and rear windows are not supposed to be tinted in NY.
Second, depending on who does your State inspection, they will check the percentage of tint you apply.
I think NY State only allows 37% tint, and a certification label stating the percentage tint applied, has to be on the window that is tinted as well.
Guys, correct me if I'm wrong.

Are you saying that you can not have both the front and back tinted, only one or the other?? You must be able to tint windows if you said that NY allows up to 37%. I see cars all over the state with tinted windows both front and back and they sell them that way. I guess now I am really confussed...does your car have tinted windows?? I must not be understanding your message. Thanks for the reply and maybe you can straighten me out.....

I got mine tinted for about $175. I have the back window tinted and its never gotten me into any trouble. I don't know if it's illegal or not.

I always heard that only having the front windows tinted would get you trouble. As for the rest of the car it doesn't matter. But I never had a problem with my tint at all.

So as long as I do not get my front windows tinted I should be o.k.! But, even if they are tinted I may not have any trouble especially if I am not looking to get them very dark at all!!??

I quote Section 375, paragraph 12-a, subdivisions (b), (d), (e) and (f) of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law.
(b) No person shall operate any motor vehicle upon any public highway, road or street: (1) the front windshield of which is composed of, covered by or treated with any material which has a light transmittance of less than seventy percent unless such materials are limited to the uppermost six inches of the windshield; or (2) the sidewings or side windows of which on either side forward of or adjacent to the operator's seat are composed of, covered by or treated with any material which has a light transmittance of less than seventy percent; or (3) if it is classified as a station wagon, sedan, hardtop, coupe, hatchback or convertible and any rear side window has a light transmittance of less than seventy percent; or (4) the rear window of which is composed of, covered by or treated with any material which has a light transmittance of less than seventy percent. A rear window may have a light transmittance of less than seventy percent if the vehicle is equipped with side mirrors on both sides of the vehicle so adjusted that the driver thereof shall have a clear and full view of the road and condition of traffic behind such vehicle. (d) The commissioner may test any window for a person who has been charged with violating this subdivision. If such window is found to bein conformity with this subdivision, a small label attesting to the conformity shall be affixed to the window tested.
(e) On and after January first, nineteen hundred ninety-two, no person shall manufacture, sell, offer for sale, equip or operate a motor vehicle in this state in violation of the provisions of this subdivision, except that a person may operate a nineteen hundred ninety-one or earlier model year vehicle without violating this subdivision if the windows on said vehicle were in conformity with this subdivision as it existed on December thirty-first, nineteen hundred ninety-one.
(f) The commissioner shall make such rules and regulations as he shall deem necessary to carry out the provisions of this subdivision.

Thanks for the time to write all of that information!!! So, let me try and get ahold of this. The front windows can not be tinted more than 30% and the back windows can be tinted whatever as long as we have both side mirrors on our cars. Am I reading this correctly...Hey, Peace to all those that have taken the time to respond!!!

My interpretation says that any window from the C-pillar forward can be tinted no more than 30% under any circumstances.
The rear window can be tinted as dark as you want, provided that your car has a side mirror mounted on both the right and left front doors.
And I didn't have to type that all in...just a bit of cut n' paste. Formatting it so that it looked tidy was a beeeeotch, though.
