Mondeo MK 1 & 2 equipped with CD4E ATX had a swich next to the shifter that allowed you to change between Econo and Sport mode. Slightly different shift pattern; in Sport mode the downshifts are earlier and the gears are held longer.

Australian Brochure on Contour.org I don't know if and whe it was available in with the Contour or Mystique, or if the programming and hardware is present in the US version of the CD4E to retrofit it.
The OD off switch in the shifter only disables the overdrive (at least in all ATX Mondeos), making 3rd the highest available gear.
