I know this has been ask before, but I never saw the answer and couldn't find it through searching. The Haynes manual says the transmission has two settings. How do you change these settings?

Overdrive Off button on the shifter controls Sport and Economy mode.

Then it says it also has the O/D button that controls the fourth gear. Not that it controls the modes.

I think that the Haynes manual refers to an option only available in Europe.

Mondeo MK 1 & 2 equipped with CD4E ATX had a swich next to the shifter that allowed you to change between Econo and Sport mode. Slightly different shift pattern; in Sport mode the downshifts are earlier and the gears are held longer.

The switch can be seen in the small lower picture if you look closely: Australian Brochure on Contour.org

I don't know if and whe it was available in with the Contour or Mystique, or if the programming and hardware is present in the US version of the CD4E to retrofit it.

The OD off switch in the shifter only disables the overdrive (at least in all ATX Mondeos), making 3rd the highest available gear.

Turning O/D off makes it hold gears a bit longer, it does not change shifting beyond that.

Pressing the O/D button (and turning off the O/D) does NOTHING more than disable the overdrive gear . The main reason for turning off the O/D is for sustained slower speeds and steep hilly roads where the trans would be switching between 3rd & O/D , as this is very tough on the trans . The Euro cars have a Sport/Economy mode selector that changes shift patterns . North American models do not have this feature frown .

On a driver reponsive transmission like the one in the Contours (which will do whatever your right foot tells it to do), the sport and economy modes are useless gimmicky frills, almost as bad as these selectable gear monstrosities. It may be a European car feature to make the car appear more upscale, but it does not help the performance or function of the car. You hold your foot down, and it will hold it all the way up the tach.

ummm... isn't the comp set to shift at certain rmps??? and why did every1 go into explaining the O/D, i already know bouts it... the euro shift would allow u yo go into higher rpm range, so maybe if our cars have decent power at higher rpms than those euro dudes can beat us in races.
