The part is definitely an EVR (EGR vacuum regulator) and NOT a DPFE. I bought one yesterday for $25.63 ($26.78 w/ tax) from a local dealer. It is a Ford-only part. Part # for my car was F63Z-9J459-AA.

It is part of the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system, which is used to recirculate some of the exhaust back into the engine to be burned up (for emissions).

It regulates the amount of vacuum that goes to the EGR valve (the silver thing that looks like a flying saucer smile ). The vacuum in turn is used to open the EGR valve and let exhaust gas into the engine. Lack of vacuum releases and thus closes the EGR valve.

If it isn't working properly, a CEL code 401 or 402 will probably be thrown in the next few drive cycles.
