I had the black plastic OEM pump go on my '97 on May 10, replaced with metal Tredex.
Now my '98 black plastic OEM has gone and I ordered another metal one this am which will hopefully arrive tomorrow.( Edit: Pump arrived 4:30pm from Tredex in Quebec)

Pump circulates coolant(water + anti-freeze) around engine/heater core/rad.
When plastic impeller breaks, no forced circulation therefore engine overheats. Same thing happens if your water pump drive belt fails or a hose ruptures. Latter most serious since you lose coolant, but generally you would have warning -- lots of steam!
Pump (and belt on v6 Contiques) failure unfortunately is only detected via temperature gauge rising rapidly.
