Pump arrived at noon today, curious the casting, shaft and pulley are stamped GMB Japan. Cost was $126 Cdn + tax (no casting charge since it's new, not reman). I won't lengthen post by reciting details but the telephone customer service at this "cubby hole of a store front" was amazing. I'll be back. .... Pump on my '98 failed Friday, autopsy performed yesterday which confirmed diagnosis, so I'll be ordering another first thing tomorrow. Two wp failures in May on cars with one year age and 20k km difference.

I'm confussed. That was the plastic impeller version that failed correct?

When water pump goes kaboom usually prequils the engine going kaboom as well..
symptoms:engine temp going through the stratosphere
Solution: switch to new waterpump with metal impellar cost: $60US Installation: can be done by yourself
If not done: cost of replacing enging = $5000

Yes.
I had the black plastic OEM pump go on my '97 on May 10, replaced with metal Tredex.
Now my '98 black plastic OEM has gone and I ordered another metal one this am which will hopefully arrive tomorrow.( Edit: Pump arrived 4:30pm from Tredex in Quebec)

Pump circulates coolant(water + anti-freeze) around engine/heater core/rad.
When plastic impeller breaks, no forced circulation therefore engine overheats. Same thing happens if your water pump drive belt fails or a hose ruptures. Latter most serious since you lose coolant, but generally you would have warning -- lots of steam!
Pump (and belt on v6 Contiques) failure unfortunately is only detected via temperature gauge rising rapidly.
