I'm doing it myself on the '95...the '96 only has about 76K on it so I will get Ford to do that one.

does anyone have the pics of the wiring harness (or where to check)??? they were posted on here a few months back but when i searched last week i couldn't find them...

ford supposedly checked my car when it was in for atx replacement back in feb....they found no problem

however when i looked just now i see cracked wiring in the following places:

1...maf connector several wires with cracked insulation
2...something on the top of the atx...haynes calls it 'inhibitor switch multi-plug' ... confused
3...connector (to pcm???) it sits right next to p/s reservoir behind the right strut tower
4...connector on top of fan housing

are or should any of these be covered under the recall???....these are just the things i can see....i still have 4k miles to try to get ford to fix this, but if u guys say these things are covered and i still have trouble im going to raise a stink...and i dont mean with del taco food

Yes! If you can see bare copper where there should be insulation...run, don't walk, to your nearest Ford dealer for one free wiring harness replacement! Do it BEFORE you reach 100,000 miles, otherwise you'll be in the boat of crap that I'm in frown

Thanks for the recall info mystiqueSVT. Is there any way to make your wires crack purposely?(I just want to get it taken care of). I think mine are alright, some areas where tape or covering should be, there isn't, though I see no copper wires.

Wiggle them. Move them around. That's how mine started cracking (the insulation was already brittle, but that's only a matter of time).

Most of the cracking occurs where tape/covering is not present. The Throttle Position Sensor usually cracks along with the wire going to the fuel injectors. Also check the wires on top of the radiator, those are the wires that control the fans. Those connectors probably have bare wire....mine did.

Warning: If you find cracked wires on the Fuel Charge harness (fuel injectors) do not play with them too much. This may crack more wires that are covered by tape and your car will not run due to shorting out. Trust me....I've experienced this myself!!! I had to get rides for two weeks while I researched this topic.

I just replaced my main engine wiring harness. It came from Bill Jenkins as well. Here's the link to what I pulled out of my car. In the one pic, you'll see a "orange w/yellow trace" wire sticking up in the air (i.e., no longer connected to the other side...) yeah, that's my main power feed to the ECM. No wonder I had zero everything on my car...

I love my Contour to death, but my 'vette is still my #1 baby.
There's money to be made in racing. I should know. I put a lot of it there.

woohoo for ford finally...

took car to local dealer ... at first i was thinking it was gonna be another bad service experience as i had to wait 10-15 mins on the service drive before anyone would help me and i was the only customer there...2 or 3 guys in the booth seemed to ignore me but then i heard the call over the pa for a service tech to come help me so i guess they weren't techs laugh

anyway a guy finally shows up and i start to tell him about the wiring harness recall...he stops me mid sentence (ut oh here it goes im thinking)

instead he say 'yeah i know all about that recall...its a couple hrs work and u can bring it in at 9am tomorrow' eek eek

he didn't even look under the hoood!!! and i was waiting to show him all the cracks i've found

they get the work done and quickly without messing up something else and i will give him a very good recommendation to ford

What I want to know is, why the hell does that wiring harness cost so much in the first place.

I remember reading an article some time ago about how an Explorer assembled from parts would cost over $1 million. That is just ridiculous.

"When I take action, I'm not going to fire a $2 million missile at a $10 empty tent and hit a camel in the butt. It's going to be decisive." - President George W. Bush
