I can't remember if this was Jeff Foxworthy or Bill Engvall that said that the schools with them selling all these things, are turning the kids into little Amway people! :p
You hear these statistics like the "$1 per student" and all that. You know what, I need proof to believe these things. It all goes into fiscal accountability to us, the taxpayers. Everybody gave Jesse such flack when he said education is a black hole. I think he was dead on, and Andy, RT, and kazanma are directly associated with the education system, and even they can't answer "where does the money go, what does the money do?"
Of course, I can beef on the unions here too. A lot of money could be saved with volunteers in the district providing the labor for some renovation projects, and companies could donate supplies (Home Depot giving paint for classrooms is great PR for them, for example).
I also think as a society, we need to start treating education as a privilege, rather than a right (and to kids, as a punishment). I think if parents got this impression, they'd be a lot more likely to put the responsiblity on their children to perform, not on the schools, which then try all these fancy and expensive "programs" to boost some figures which really only remove from the task of educating the child.
Sorry... I could rant for hours on this too!
