Just so i don't get ripped, would anyone of you know how much labour would be required to replace a front left hub bearing from a Contour?

And how much would the hub bearing be on average?

thanks.

I had my left side wheel bearing done 5 days ago.

$31 for the bearing, $85 for labor, and $3.43 for tax. It was well worth it considering a buddy and I spent 2 days doing the right side ourselves. Let me tell you, frozen rotors and hubs are a PITA!!! mad

that was the best.
I think from here on in, any of our mod meets should be hack meets.
screw doing things the proper way with the proper tools.
we don't need any of that crap!

"ahh it's ok that it's bent, it's a craftsman"

What would doin' it u'rself entail. I would have an experienced mechanic with proper tools helping me, so how hard would it be?

if you have the proper tools....it wouldn't be bad at all.
the only thing we didn't have that would have been a big help was a press.
the old bearing is pressed in, and needs to be pressed out. then the new one pressed back in.
if you follow a haynes maunual on the the disassembly of the hub and axle you should be all set.

dont forget the torque wrench, some length of pipe (for leverage), anti-seize.

and becareful with the 18mm bolts that are on the back side of the hub.

thanks for the advice and illustrations. Initially a friend was going to help me do it but he said he needed to borrow a press. Now i know what a press looks like and i wouldn't want him to struggle too much with it. All in all, i think i'll just go to the mechanic and get it done.
oh yeah, i bought a hub bearing. it cost me $68 canadian with tax. = around 40's usd. It was from Ford. Is there cheaper? just so i know in the future?

what you see there in the pics, isn't the press you need. that is a jerry-rigged attempt to press it out. the proper press looks basically like a bottle jack mounted to some sort of crossmember/support. you would put the hub in between the jack and the support, and start pumping the jack. it would tehn push the bearing out.

we eventually ended up going to home depot and bought a cast iron pipe connector/reducer. i believe it was 2" dia an the big end, and had to be groound down a little to fit into the hub nicely. we used that to force the new bearing in.

yep, when I whipped out the die grinder and the air hammer that bearing got scaraed and just jumped out. But it was too slow, I had already owned it by the time it got out. Notice the 2 big pieces, there are 2 or 3 more smaller ones. Not to mention that Elky blew it up, there were steel balls all over the place.
