Hi. I just bought a red '98 SVT on Saturday and was wondering if there was a way to figure out visually if I have a 98 or 98.5. When I bought it, there was no SVT paperwork with it or even an owner's manual. I called the dealer today where I bought it, and they are 'looking' into getting me one. We'll see how they follow through. BTW, I love this car. I did some research on this board last week, before I went to look at it. And the 9005 bulbs are now in the lowbeam headlight sockets.

differences in 98>98.5 taken from contour faq...
GL is no more. Now only the LX, SE, and SVT. Basically, now LX=GL, SE=LX, SE + sport package=old SE More decontenting: split rear seats only available on the SE Clock in radio, no longer in dash SVT wheels changed to Cobra style, strut dampenings changed Rear window/brake light design changed Color revisions

BUT, it appears I have the newer 3rd brake light. My clock is in the dash. I guess I own a true '98. Thanks again.

If you have the smoother wheels, "flowing" wheels, you most likely have a 98. If you have the 5-spoke that look similiar to the Cobra wheels, or the SVT Focus wheels, you most likely have a 98.5. -A

If you see an SE with a Zetec and without side skirts or an LX with cheaper seats. 1998.5 If it's a GL or has '16v' on the sides, it's a 98. Early SE's and LX's had the top line interiors, SE had side skirts. The #1 Clue is 98's have a chrome antenna base, 98.5's do not!

Check your build date on the driver door jamb. Also call SVT and get a copy of the certificate.

My 98.5 SE has no sideskirts, but does have 24v badges. Not "sport" model.

Is the build date after 8/97? It's a 98.5

The "1998.5" brochure is dated 8/97, so after that date is the newer models.
