I never heard of a contour in my life untill 1998. Actually, I still didn't hear, but saw one. It was an SVT silver in a mcdonald's parking lot and it caught my eye. before that, and for the two years after that, didn't know what they were. Then in 2000 I was looking for a car to get and kind of remembered the silver car in that parking lot. I asked my friend what it was and he didn't remember either, but I knew it was an svt, so I looked up all the svt models on the web.
"Contour, what the hell is that?"
That is what I said. Then I got my 95 SE and now notice every one that drives by. Ford's marketing on the contour sucks. There are millions of them on the road. They are everywhere and yet no one knows what they are even to this day. As far as conversations, the best was with my SE. It had dual exhaust and alot of engine mods and could keep up with the svt stock:
"Is that a contour?"
"yeah"
"Is it an SVT?"
"no"
"Just a grocery getter huh?"
"Not really"
Not to drag this on longer, but the best was with my friend in what is now MY svt about a year ago. We went to a hangout spot where all the civic and import drivers showcase their cars every night and started talking to them. They asked if it was fast and we said yes. Then the comment was said:
"What do you mean it's fast, it's a four door!"
Me and him raced two tricked out civics, one a hatchback and on the coupe and by 40mph we were beating them pretty bad. Came back and asked if anyone else wanted to give it a run. No one said anything.

Even though I'd read about the SVT car it wasn't until I saw the PPG pace car at the CART 500 mile race at Fontana a few years ago that made me really take notice. Like Troy@SVT said in another post, they don't really advertise, they just rely on enthusiast's word of mouth, magazine articles or like in my case, a pace car to get the message out. It worked! laugh

No I sold the SE to a family member last December. Everytime I see it (even though I have an svt) I get sad. frown I still love the 95 se more than the svt. That's right. I'm not ashamed. I had a 2002 ranger until this month. It was cool, I modded the 4.0 to about 235hp and put 18" saleen wheels on it. My friend had this svt and he wanted my truck. I just so happened to be looking to cut my payments so he gave me hi svt and 10,500 for my ranger. Pretty good deal escept I let him keep all the aftermarket stuff.

I've had a few people honestly ask me what my car is as they have no idea. They kinda go silent when i say "Ford Contour".

I also get alot of stick from my co workers about my car. They laugh when I tell them I'm going to the drags etc, there like "haha, Simon's going racing in his sports car...like a contour is a sports car!!"...never have I said a Contour is a sports car, but it does whoop ass over the majority of ricer cars out there. They just dont get it!
