Perhaps old news but in this months issue of SCC it states:
"According to a report in the "Automotive News" Ford design chief J. Mays has admitted teh company is looking at bringing the Mondeo front-drive sedan to the United States, probably as a Mercury, and as soon as next year. The Mondeo, in first-generation form, was sold here before as the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique (duh!) but didn't make it to North America in its second generation, although it's structure is the basis for the Jaguar X-Type. If it gets here, and Ford is good to us, we'll maybe get the sporting ST220 version with a 220-hp version of the 3.0L Duratec V6 aboard."

Looks like it actually might happen this time. We shall see.

Old news. It's not going to happen as told in more recent reports. frown

We are getting Mazda 6 derived Fords and Mercs. No 2001 generation Mondeo cars, except the Jag X.

What was the first?
confused
The 1998's were not that different than the 95's to call it a 'new generation'.

technically the Mk1 Mondeos were sold from 1993 to 1997, Mk2 from 1998 to 2000, and Mk3 from 2001 to present.

i know there might not be THAT many differences mechanically, but the cars look different. And i think VCT was introduced for the Zetec in 1998.

And the SVT made its debut in 1998, that gotta account for something!

variable cam timing. I'm not sure what ford's version does, but in a nutshell, variable cam timing is used to boost performance in one rev range without sacrificing performance in another range.

True but it depends on which cam. The VCT on the newer Contours was on the exhaust cam. It was for emissions (it got rid of the EGR). The VCT on the SVT Focus got it on the intake cam for performance.
