Update:

First off this is the dealer's second round of fixing the problem. Last fall the car acted up and the dealer replaced the IAC and reflashed the PCM. This worked for about 6 months (5 000km). The car began to idle hih this spring with the odd throttle stick at about 4000rpm. I took the car in and they disconnected the power while they ran some test. The car ran fine for the past week. They still went ahead and ordered a throttle hang fix kit from Ford and installed it today. I wasn't able to quiz any knowledgeable service people as to what the kit contained so I will just go from my work order.

Here are the details:

Order SOP kit

Install connector for throttle position sensor. Perform EEC test and monitor PIDS, idle seems ok at this time.

12650D EEC (quick test) - diagnosis - L
12650D45 Pin Point Test - diagnosis- L

14200A Wiring Assembly - Repair- L

FC: D1142

I think the jargon is just for internal coding but what I take from all of this is that they changed/upgrade a wire(s) connecting to the Throttle Position Sensor. All was OK on the drive home.

Any thoughts?

If you disconnect the large flexible hose that feeds air into the throttle body, you'll notice carbon deposits collect around the brass intake "flap", (don't know the technical term...sorry) that prohibit the engine from breathing properly at when the throttle is returned to the idle position. Use a little carb cleaner and spray the intake til the carbon deposits dissolve. (burns up during combustion). This returns the intake idle setting and allows the engine to breathe normally at idle. This has always fixed the problem for me. I attribute the deposits a function of all the oil sprayed on aftermarket air filters like K&N, etc. eventually being pulled through the intake in very small quantities...also the brass flap is prone to oxidation...again, leaving deposits where it comes in contact with the intake housing. Just routine maintenance. Hope it helps... mdlinton@lucent.com
What you are doing here is cleaning the throttle body. This is something I do frequently (roughly about every 10,000 miles or so). It often makes a difference, but as some are describing, sometimes the problem is more involved. Two of the less common items that can cause this is a sticking Idle Air Control valve and a defective Throttle Position Sensor. You should always start with a good throttle body cleaning before moving to something else.

I'm sorry if I seem to keep repeating myself, but it does make a difference, often a very big difference.

It sounds like they replaced the wiring connector. I have not had any experience with this exact thing, but from the way it was written up it sounds like they fond a bad connector and made a wiring repair.

I have expierenced the same problem in my 2000 CSVT. Took it to the dealer and they replaced the IAC and that took care of the problem for about a month. Came back and they replaced the IAC again. Fixed it for about 3 days. Took it to a different dealer. They said the filiment in the MAF was bad. They blamed the K&N air filter in the car and told me to use the factory element. To me it sounded like a load of crap but I put the factory element back in anyway. It has been over a year and the problem never came back. My only conclusion is that the K&N was the problem. The only thing I don't like about this is now I have to shell out the $$ to replace the paper filter every so often. I was not mad about power loss, because I dynoed the car the weekend before I took out the K&N and there was negligible benefit.

Forgot to add. They did replace the MAF under warranty. I also would not have believed them except the problem (High Idle) started occuring shortly after installing the K&N filter, so over-oiling after a cleaning could be ruled out.

I've had the surging problem with and without the K&N.

rock sniffer: please post again if the problem returns, if not I'll assume the kit worked and I'll get one (if the problem returns knock on wood). Thanks, great find, the surging problem has been one of the most frustrating issues I've ever had with a car.

Did you have the MAF replaced after you pulled the K&N out?

So far so good. Just got back from an out of town wedding. The CSVT ran like a charm and when I got there the idle was behaving itself. Before the fix the idle will be high after a highway run. Man this car likes to cruise, at 90 mph it just seems to be in the goove. At this speed the rpms are about 3500 and I think the second set of intakes are open. I think I use less gas at 90 than I do at 70.
