Since you are in Birmingham, check out 220 Merrill. The atmosphere is a little snobby for me, but I can't complain about the food. I also dig Pita Cafe (Woodward, N of Maple) for cheap middle eastern food.

If you make it down to my neck of the woods, Royal Oak, go for 4th Street Brewery, Tom's Oyster Bar, and my favorite cheap bar Ye Olde Saloon (the place has never seen natural light).
