If you like the looks of the Duc Monster, I would suggest the Honda Hawk GT. They are a little bit older ('88 to '91), but were ahead of their time. A 650 twin with decent torque. I have had mine for 6 years and love it. Not to mention that one can be had for around $3k in great shape, that is if you can find one. I think they make a great starter bike, with some room to grow.
