Thanx Georgia Tech. How's that saying go... MIT, the Georgia Tech of the North... FWIW, my old roommate graduated w/ a CS degree from GT in May, started out making 70k. Then again, another friend graduated in May w/ EE degree and as of Sept he didn't have a job. Clemson has a new Motorsports Engineering program that's under their Mechanical Engineering department. Students concentrating in motorsports engineering follow a traditional curriculum in mechanical engineering with emphasis on vehicle dynamics, aerodynamics, structural analysis and simulation and experimentation. Current projects are exploring areas such as aerodynamics, simulation, vehicle dynamics, tire behavior and test data analysis that make use of state-of-the-art simulation, experimental and computational tools. Could be something worth looking in to. The good Illinois engineering school is U of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign. Purdue is right up there was well.

IIRC, if you are a resident of GA, GT can be extremely affordable and Perry is right, it ranks right up there with the very best in the nation.

Tuition can be free(!) if you are a Georgia resident. Just keep your GPA above 3.0, which is much easier said than done. Otherwise, under $2000/sememster for residents, maybe $5500 for non-residents. Best Engineering schools.

p3rry - the magical word there is "CS". I can believe those guys making serious moola, but not a snot-nosed, straight-outa-college Engineer. Not in Detroit EVER! I told my boss about Horse's comment and he almost choked on his Mountain Dew!

I believe that engineers at my company are normally starting mid 40s out of college. then again, most of the new hirees are from kettering or michigan tech and have had coop programs with our company. So they essentially have experience when we hire them.

Unlimited_Boost, let me try and summarize the answer's to your questions.
1) Definately go with an engineering degree rather that an engineering technology degree. The particular field (Mechanical, Electrical, etc.) is up to you. The majority of Automtive Engineers are probably ME, but I'm sure there are quite a few with different degrees. Most schools teach the same basics, but the resources and expectations vary with each program/school. By going with a more theory oriented engineering curriculum rather than an eng. tech. you will have more options in the future.
2) Everybody had a favorite school, and every engineering school is one of the best! IMHO, how good the school is depends on how good of a student you are capable of being. The stronger the academic, the stonger your competition will be. Pick something affordable, with lots of resources, and a good atmosphere (social and academic) that suits you.
3) Co-op or intern! I cannot stress this enough. This will make getting a job easier, it will help you decide were you want to go, and best of all you get paid!
