definitely bucket and soap for me. car wash is a rip! end up putting at least $5 in quarters in there each time i go (ever other week or so). gets me like 6 minutes to rinse/wash/rinse/wax. i dont like to be rushed when i'm washing the 'tour. 
OH god no! don't use those "quarter" car washes , or at least not to brush the paint. Those brushes are soooo dirty and leave swirl marks/scratches all over, or least roud here - the owners never clean the washes enough and when any dirty pick-up pulls up , well you might as well go home. :p
