judge i'm sorry 2 hear about your friend,a friend of mine also died,he was riding a honda 150 scooter.i personally think u can hurt yourself just as badly on either a 600 a 750.people die on scooters mopeds and bicycles.i think an old 86 ninja 600 would b a great starter bike u can drop it a few times and it won't depreciate much.but if he wants a gixxer buy 1.just take some kinda riding course and buy leathers and a good quality helmet

roland, nobody is trying to scare anybody, we all have stories of bad things that happen on bikes, I am named after my Dad's best friend who was killed on his bike, and my brother's best friend was run over by a semi on his Katana.
Point is, he asked for recomendations on a good first bike, and people were offering their opinions on a good first bike.
Personally, I would recommend a bike that is somewhat comfortable and doesn't have a really peaky motor, or one that has a lot more power than a novice can safely use. I suggest these things because that way he can get used to riding without having to really worry that much about the bike (geez, My first bike was a Yamaha YSR50, fits all of the above except the peaky part, but c'mon it was only a 50cc 2-stroke) and when he is comfortable with riding, then step up to a "bigger" bike.
It's all about balance.

i suggested an 86 600r comfortable easy 2 ride yet still fast enough 2 enjoy plus dropping it a couple times doesn't hurt the wallet so bad ,how much can a 1000$ bike deppreciate.sell it in 6 months and buy the gsxr.i'm not trying 2 start a bunch of crap.i just know every time i pull my helmet off i hear the same suprised your still alive crap.this bike talk is killing me i had hand surgery last summer and again this summer so my bikes been sitting in a bike bubble 4 over 2 years.damn do i miss riding.

Hey don't rag on the class. When I'm on the road I can tell who took the class and who didn't. So can the insurance company. Hey why is thier drivers ed for car's? Oh and why are thier driving classes for auto-x?

Just call me Judge. People suck. Life begins at 170mph...until that point it is just boring.....
