They were always crappy. You defanately should change it, unless you have factory warranty on it, then when it runs out change it. (Because Ford should change it if it goes bad, and if there's any engine damage, then you can get a new motor)

The V6 engine has a water pump with a plastic impeller. The later ones seem to have improved the plastic, but they still fail too soon and too often. There are aftermarket water pumps available with metal impellers.

The 4 cylinder engine does not have this same problem.

'92 tempo? I feel your pain.

I was actually tempted to buy a '94 Tempo when I was 18. It was $3000, had the auto seat belts, only 50k miles and in real good condition...except that they backed it up into a snow bank to hide the fact that it was rear ended. I gave them $300 down for it (being the dumb teenager I *was* at the time) and told them I'd buy it if they could inspect it (it was due for inspection a month ago). When they called me about it, they said it would cost $1500 to inspect it because the car was rear ended and needed body work. I told them that I didn't want to buy it and I wanted my money back, to which they said "Well, deposits can't be refunded". I told them "Why didn't you tell me it was rear ended before I put a deposit down on it? Well, I'll see you in court for fraud then." Immediately he told me he wanted me to come down and talk about it, and had my $300 waiting for me. He was even going to give me a good deal on another car as a gesture of good will, but I told him to go f**k himself and bought another car from a private owner two days later.

The point of the story? Tempos suck, and don't buy cars from Gary Miller Mazda in Erie, PA smile
