i had my friends shop do it for me as they cleaned out my UIM at the same time. trust me take it off. mine was just filthy, black stuff just packed on there. pretty gross. i wouldn't do it without taking it off to make sure i get both sides spottless.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I may try to tackle unbolting the TB - after buying a new gasket, just in case - and cleaning it that way.

I'll try to tackle it this weekend, if the weather permits. Thanks again to everyone.

I think you'll be happy you took the TB off. This is really the only way to get the EGR ports cleaned up and all the gunk out from behind the TB. A 1/4" socket set with a 6" extension is about all you need tool wise. While you have the TB off, cut off the extra screw threads holding the butterfly plate and smooth down the shaft. wink

When you take UIM off shouldn't you get paranoid about dust getting inside ? Is it a good idea to do an oil change after you done ?

Might anyone know the part number for the gasket off the top of their head? If not, where would I find said part number?
