I saw a VERY nice Escape the other day. It was black with dark gray leather. But, the gray plastic body molding was painted black as well. Very classy. Of course it had the V6, and was pretty loaded. Good gas milage, etc for a nice sized SUV.

The Escape is very nice. Drove one around a short on-road/off-road course last weekend. The wife might get the hybrid version when it comes out late in 2004.
Also drove a new Explorer over the same course. Vastly improved (no longer a tarted up Ranger). Very nice also. Take your pick. Or...
Land Rover Disco.
Focus ZW wagon. Leather, moonroof, stability control. Nice car. A real sleeper.

Funny you should mention the soccer mom thing, but....SUVs these days have just as much of a soccer mom image as minivans ever did.

I've been a Chrysler/Ford person for several years. You could always wait for the 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser GT with the turbo. Reasonable MPG, very versatile, and tons of stuff out there to "fix it up". Plus the turbo will make a difference in performance over the std engine.
