Don't take the clearcoat off! Just take the wheels off and hand clean them throughly, apply wheel polish on them. Then use a clean wet terry cloth to wipe it clean everytime you wash your car. I do that, and my wheels are shiny all the time (after cleaning them of course) without using any wheel cleaner product.
