just to add, i usually cover the intake and coil pack with bags to keep water out. If there's still dirt they can be cleaned by hand. Lightly hose everything off, and dry it more with a towel.
My battery is in the trunk...but i still cover it when i wash the car because it drips when you open the tunk later!
