I have a friend who is buying a 2006 Nissan Altima 2.5 Special Edition tomorrow. It only has 150 miles on it, yet the dealer has disclosed that the engine was replaced. My friend knows zero about cars. The dealer "claims" that alot of 2006 2.5 Altimas were "recalled to the factory to replace defective engines." The only recall I can find is for the rear suspension link bracket. Does anyone know anything about this engine recall? I told him that it sounds fishy and that is why I am researching for his dumba$$ . I don't want to see him get stuck with a lemon (again).

I know that some of the early '06s had a problem with highly excessive oil consumption that could ultimately lead to fires. But to my knowledge there's been no campaign to replace engines by Nissan at all unless they were directly affected by that recall. It wasn't a recall, in that they replaced all the engines, but they did replace engines on those that were affected. I suppose it's possible that they were able to determine it was affected within just 150 miles.

If it is new and never titled, I don't think carfax will show anything.

didn't you say 150 miles? Wasn't used by the dealer at all? Well if the engine was replaced, I don't know, is there another altima he could look at from another dealership?

(Sarcasm on) No way! Japanese cars don't have recalls. Only domestics like Ford have recalls. (Sarcasm off).

Make fun if you want, but I wouldn't make fun of Nissan's Altima, which is a mass produced car having the potential for some engine problem when your dear FOMOCO built several Ford GTs with a improper finish on an engine component that cuased major oil leakage. Oh yeah, how did Ford fix that problem? I'll give you a clue, they didn't replace the engines like Nissan did, they used a "Speedy Sleeve" to correct the problem. Pretty half assed fix for such an expensive flagship car if you ask me.
Anyway, back to the topic. I did hear about a engine replacement program and extended powertrain warranty on some '06 Altimas. I guy that I worked with had one and he had his engine replaced under the program. So did one of his friends who had a '06 Altima. I'd say the car is fine, and if the price is good, your friend should go for it.
