Do you have flickering headlights? If it is electrical, you will know very soon. I doubt it is the alternator wiring. If it is, you will notice the flickering Battery/Charge light (even during the day). For all you know, the alternator wiring fix has already been done. I think the change in wiring diagrams for that was in 3/98.
Yes, take out the drilled plug first and see if it helps.
