That totally blows man. I hope your recovery is speedy and as painless as possible.
As for the deer, my father always told me to never swerve for an animal in the road, even if they are large.
Your chances of involving other people and vehicles are much greater and it's not worth killing yourself or someone else over a deer/rabbit/dog.
The only reason I would swerve would be if it were a human in my way.
Although sometimes you can't help the reaction.

yeah my dad always said choose hit the animal or worse swerve and not know what your going to hit,,, ive been in situations where dogs have gone in front of me i hit my brakes and keep her steady and pray for the animal.

Yes, the deer is better to hit. It's a Comprehensive claim, as critters are considered an Act of God. Therefore, lower deductible (in most cases) and no premium increase.
