not all public education is worthless. i attended a public school (though it was in a small municipality and only about 700 students in 9, 10, 11, and 12th grade combined). granted, we had our share of idiots and those voted most likely to flip my burgers in 10 years, but really who doesn't.

The same. If the students respect the teacher (and vice versa!) worthwhile education can occur. I had several teachers who clearly loved teaching, and for the most part stayed in honors-AP courses where the students liked learning. (The exception was History, which was in a sense nice because I got to interact with multiple crowds while in school and wasn't entirely deemed a nerd by others since they saw how poorly I did in that subject, lol!)

Honestly, I am surprised you of all people place such a negative stereotype among anybody based simply on a factor such as his/her educational background.

It is proper grammar to use a comma before every item in a series except for the last one. Therefore a comma before the conjunction should be used.

The public school system is far from underfunded. I believe the federal and state governments mandate far too much, which forces schools to use money in less efficient ways. However, school districts spend over $8500 per student on average. This is plenty of money to do the job, they just need to stop looking at the taxpayers as an endless resource of money.

Catholic schools prove this every day. They operate in every socioeconomic condition. They operate on a fraction of the cost per student of public schools, yet consistently outperform them.

I was taught that it is an option if you choose to use/not use the comma before "and" in a serial sentence. It once was a common practice, but lately it is more acceptable to not use it.Basically it boils down to personal preference.

In a compound sentence, however, you must use a comma befoer the "and". Thought that's was not the case here.

That is proof our schools are teaching children incorrectly.

The Modern Languages Association (MLA), a definitive organization in the proper written use of the American English language, states in their Handbook the commma is mandatory.
