The Modern Languages Association (MLA), a definitive organization in the proper written use of the American English language, states in their Handbook the commma is mandatory.

The MLA is only one standard. It's not incorrect as far as I'm concerned; it's just an American modification that's unnecessary. That being said, I generally use it because it prevents ambiguity.

The "Oxford comma" or "serial comma" as it's called is frequently used in American English, but not so much in British English. The Associated Press, and most individual newspapers and magazines, agree that the Oxford comma may be omitted in a simple series. Thus, in most American public schools, they teach its inclusion as being optional. I'm a product of public schooling by the way, and with your high-class education, I'm surprised you didn't know that.

Again, you missed my mistake. You are slipping...

I should wait an hour after getting to work before I start posting. I have yet to fully wake up...

Where's the mistake? 'A lot' is indeed two words. Granted, I didn't get squat for sleep last night, and never fully wake up until 11:00 regardless of the amount of sleep I get. Still, I've reread your post several times and don't see the mistake to which you are referring.

My other pet peeve is 'irregardless.' It's doubly irritating when improper grammer gets so commonplace as to become acceptable usage. It's just plain 'regardless'!!!!!

I didn't spell anything incorrectly, but I did use the wrong word. It is in bold. I originally used the word "works" instead of "words". And yes, "irregardless" is another one. Wal-Marts bothers me too. Especially when someone types it like that.

OK...got it. I was searching for the mistake in the one you'd already corrected. Like I said, I'm not fully cognizant until the morning is almost over.

I'm with you on that. At least I got my coffee from the roach coach today.

I've already had a Dr. Pepper and a Big Red this morning. However, I have such a high tolerance for caffeine that it takes near lethal doses (not really, but you get the idea) for me to begin to feel the effects. As little as 12 hours without, and I begin to get the caffeine withdrawl headache.

Personally, the double negatives bother me the most.

At my last job they hired a temp, she was notorious for using double negatives. Every other sentence out of her mouth had at least one of them! They placed her in the cube next to me, so she would always be asking me questions.

"Hey Doug, we don't need no Name Affidavit for this contract do we?"
