1996 Gl 2L Auto. 97K miles

Read my check engine light...and got a code for the O2 sensor. I know I have an upstream and downstream sensors.
One old boy said..don't worry about..check engine always that way..or you will strip your threads changing it.
Another guy says it will make your engine to rich..lose gas miles..and eat up the catalytic converter.

Is replacing and o2 sensor that important? And can you damage the threads taking it in and out. Thanks.

Yes, it's important to change it. Don't let it go ignored just because the car still runs. It will run rich.

Sure, you can strip the threads, if you have a monkey change your O2 sensor. It's really not hard, I don't know anyone that stripped the threads doing it.

Before you do anything else, send it to Advance or Autozone to have it read and post the exact codes. Can't change the O2 sensor if you don't know which one to change.
