An ultrasonic cleaner is the way to go. Most school labs will have them. I don't know what "cheap and safe" solvent you can use. Maybe water. But then you need to dry the injectors real well before putting it back in. Some shops start off with a weak solution of Simple Green before putting in the ultrasonic cleaner.
