My neighbors have a Chevy Crapolier they own and use a lot since it's good on fuel appearently, however it has a small problem, the odometer just quit, and its an electric one with a LCD display... I said I'd take a look at it, however just wondering if anyone has any ideas, appearently it has flashed on/off while operating... Any suggestions on what to look for?

Another car.

Seriously, is the odometer that important in a beater like that?

Change the oil every three months until it dies.

My old Rabbit didnt have a working odometer the entire time I owned it. That car lasted me 4 years. It was nearly 20 years old when I no longer had possesion of it.

I must have put 30k or more a year on it.

I agree... what's the big deal?

Also, how did it die? Did it stop showing anything, or does it not go up anymore?

If it just stopped showing, I'll bet the display just died, but the electronics are still good...

See if maybe you can pull one of a junkyard and have the dealer (or whoever else can do it) reset it to the proper mileage... if that's too difficult/expensive, all you're required to do is get a sticker that shows what mileage was on the original odometer when you replace it...

Well, my neighbors are a bit on the older side, and they like stuff to work. The display just doesnt come on. I was just also wondered if the milage since it's digital was saved on the PCM or on the Cluster.... They would like it fixed, I don't blame them because it's harder to calculate gas milage without an odometer...

My uneducated guess would say in the cluster... but hey, maybe find a junkyard part and plug it in... might show the correct mileage (if it's stored in the PCM).

EDIT: ok, if anything Get a junkyard part and put it in. This will at least get them the trip odometer back...

All you need to do is stop by the DMV and find out about getting a door jamb sticker that says:
  • Odometer replaced
  • When it was replaced
  • Mileage on old odometer
  • Mileage on new odometer

If you just swap them out, and the new one has lower miles, it's odometer fraud! Don't wanna get caught up in that one!

It is not odometer fraud if you declare in the registration title when you sell it.

Most states' car registration titles has some statement like "The odometer reading is not the actual mileage" or something to that effect.

I suggest check the fuse, connector behind the dash and wiring from connector to PCM.

I've seen that section on the title... Iowa's titles say "WARNING: ODOMETER FRAUD" next to that check box.

Don't they still also require the sticker in the door jamb?

EDIT: I know it's Utah, but...

Here's a bit more information on this subject:

    Odometer Replacement or Repair

If the odometer needs to be repaired or replaced, the disclosure statement should read:
  • The odometer was repaired or replaced and that the present reading is identical to the reading before the repair
    -or-
  • The odometer was repaired or replaced, and because it was incapable of registering the same mileage as before, it was reset to zero.

If the odometer is repaired or replaced and then reset to zero, the disclosure statement must specify the mileage on the vehicle before the reading was altered. A notice in writing, on a form available from MVED, specifying both the date the odometer was repaired or replaced and the mileage on the vehicle before this occurred, must be permanently affixed to the left door frame of the vehicle.

Don't know about door jamb or Iowa but the VA titles say "WARNING: ODOMETER DISCREPANCY" next to the check box. I'm pretty sure ND and NC ahs that too.

I looked at it... Only have the digits light up, So kinda looks like:

    "0x3x3x TRIP"

Now, does anyone know if the digital trip odometer is modular like on the Contours, how the sections of the Cluster pull apart... (the fuel gauge pulls out, tach/speedo, and temp)

Or is Chevy a bunch of crap and has everything soldered into place, and to resolder is pointless due to the millions of connections?
