This is the avatar I use on other boards. It's called "cat-bo." The other boards I'm on only accept static images, so it isn't animated on them.

I like the small avatar (75X75). At that size even if it is animated, it isn't distracting.

I agree I hate those too!

Somethinhg along the lines of an AIM buddy icon would be more than enough. I really would prefer not to have one at all though.

Sounds like you thought of this.

That was the original I took the avatar from. As I said, the actual avatar was a static image of that. Also much much smaller. This is the actual avatar image:

I seriously doubt that that slows down the forum any, and it certainly isn't distracting.

As far as non-worksafe avatars, it should be pretty simple to prevent that. It's what we have moderators for, after all.

I have some great avatars saved from ones Ive used on other boards. Im cool with having avatars, but Im really not a fan of sigs at all.

There is only one board Im on that pulls off sigs OK, because they limit height and width to like 100x300. So they arent tall, and they arent all that wide so its not all that big of a deal. I hate sigs that make every thread look like a damn picture thread, and you cant tell where words begin and pics end.

Really, I would just do avatars only. Limit to 100x100 or something
